THE WHITE LADY

By Maryanne Zéhil

Produced by Mia Productions

In 1975, when the civil war explodes in Lebanon, a mother decides to exile her two oldest daughters, one to Montréal, the other to France. The third will stay home with her brother and their nanny. Hoda, the Montréaler, returns to Lebanon in 1980, 1983, 1990 and 2020 for, respectively, a wedding, an illness, a funeral and an inheritance.

The White Lady consists of five tableaux that, while they are set against decisive dates in the Lebanese civil war, open in Montréal and explore Hoda’s new life and evolution. Juxtaposing the horror of the fighting and Hoda’s metamorphosis in her new home, the film follows the cultural divisions that will deepen the rifts of a more private and devastating war.
